This is where I started with Sade, and it’s still a humdinger. I took it seriously as a kid, but now it reads more like a meandering comedy sketch. Was Sade engaging in sophistry, or satire? Was he mining after brutal philosophical verities, or was he following Onan’s muse in lockup? Such are the questions that have bedeviled scholars and apologists and haters since his work was rescued from oblivion.
